The union's goal with the anaconda plan was to defeat the rebellion by blocking the southern ports and controlling the Mississippi River. This would isolate the south from interacting with the north. The plan was ruined because not all of the people in the north agreed with Lincoln and someone told the south about this plan. But that didn't change much because the north eventually won the civil war.
